The bespoke hand-drawn wallcovering tells the neighborhood’s story and Andy Warhol life through illustrations of characters and places associated with the Bowery neighborhood and Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory.
The first draw of inspiration came from the Bowery itself and it’s intense, rich, eccentric and colorful history. A mix of low-brow carnivalesque artistry, hedonism, debauchery and it’s progression into a more pop art and alternative/counter culture place.
For the wall covering, we incorporated Warhol’s life through lyric extracts, iconic characters and symbolic objects like the face of his muse, a banana from the cover of the velvet underground, the horse of his first movie and the famous sofa from the factory. All these elements with the intent to engage the viewer with a nostalgic feeling that aims to be channeled in a celebration of the right here and now.
The technique was illustration, which provides both freedom and elasticity, a loose and irregular stroke was implemented to give the sensation of a sentiment, and a dream-while-your-awake collage.
